7 decades of human rights celebrated through the arts

Globally-renowned Thai artist Pichet Klunchun interprets societal issues to commemorate Human Rights Day

7 decades of Human Rights

To mark the 70th anniversary of the UN decision to observe Human Rights Day, the EU Delegation to Thailand partnered with the Ministry of Justice's Rights and Liberties Protection Department and the Pichet Klunchun Dance Company to reflect on social issues through a memorable dance performance at the Alliance Française Bangkok.

The event, held from 7 to 8 December 2020 under the theme “7 Decades of Human Rights”, addressed Thailand's human rights journey over the past 70 years. It opened with a dialogue on human rights and fundamental freedoms and demonstrated how the arts can inspire social change.

On 7 December, the performance was held exclusively for government officials, diplomats, business leaders, CSO representatives, university students and faculty members before opening to the public the following evening. The 8 December instalment also featured a Q&A session with Pichet and members of his dance company on the role of arts in tackling social and human rights issues. More than 400 attendees joined the two-day event.
