After one-year hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the European Film Festival (EUFF) in Singapore returned to the Lion City from 6 to 23 May 2021 to celebrate its third decade.

Presented by the EU Delegation to Singapore and opened by guest of honour Senior Minister of State Sim Ann, the landmark festival reflected European diversity, history and culture through visual storytelling. The 2021 instalment, held at leading independent cinema The Projector, presented 23 films during its 17-day run.

As this year's featured country, Portugal kicked off proceedings with the 2018 film Parque Mayer on 6 May. The comedy-drama explores a battle against censorship following the closure of Lisbon's theatre and entertainment district in the 1930s. In celebration of its 30th anniversary, the EUFF also organised a free public screening of the film on 12 May.

Other notable films included Ireland’s Oscar-nominated animation Wolfwalkers, Belgium’s Cannes Film Festival-winning drama Young Ahmed, Norway's Tribeca Film Festival-winning drama Before Snowfall and German biopic Gundermann.

The festival also continued its tradition of showcasing short films by young local filmmakers, this year from Ngee Ann Polytechnic's School of Film and Media Studies.
