Founded in 1911, the University of Porto (U.Porto) is a benchmark institution for Higher Education and Scientific Research in Portugal and one of the top 200 European Universities according to the most relevant international ranking systems.

The U.Porto combines high quality education focused on individual vocations and talents as well as market needs with the claim to being the greatest birthplace of science in Portugal. It is committed to converting into social assets the talent and innovation from its 14 faculties, one business school and 48 research centres. The U.Porto has the richest academic community in Portugal and brings together the country’s highest ranked students, a highly qualified scientific and teaching staff and a growing number of international students, teachers and researchers.

Being open to the community and business is the main trademark of the U.Porto. The University is itself an important driving force for economic, social, cultural and scientific development. The U.Porto creates leaders, promotes innovators and encourages entrepreneurs. In short, it trains people who can make a difference in their communities.

Here, you can find the most international of Portugal’s universities thanks to our active cooperation with hundreds of higher education institutions worldwide.

This is U.Porto, more than a university.

Student Life

No. On the contrary. From accommodation to eating, including transport services and cultural life, Porto is a low cost city when compared with most big European cities. For example, for less than 15 euros, you can have dinner, go to the cinema and buy your bus ticket to explore the city centre (check out some examples)! If you want to save even more money, you can opt for the University accommodation services or have a good, cheap meal (from 1.95 euros), in one of the canteens, restaurants, snack-bars and grills that you can find in the different university poles.

To keep track of the day-to-day activities of the University, we invite you to check our various information supports. Besides our Website, make sure you visit our news portal and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube!

By having the most complete offer in learning programmes available for Higher Education in Portugal, the U.Porto’s 15 schools (14 faculties + 1 business school) provide unique conditions to pursue an outstanding academic record which will be valued in the job market. All of this takes place in a multicultural learning environment committed to the highest standards of excellence.

The courses at the U.Porto are remarkably diverse: over 600 training programmes (graduate, postgraduate and lifelong) guarantee solutions for all types of students starting from 1st cycle undergraduates up to Masters degree and Doctoral degree students. We also offer a vast number of lifelong learning courses, advanced training courses and specialisation courses with a strong emphasis on the professional re-qualification of the participants.

Education at the U.Porto is aimed at employability and an immediate inclusion in the job market. Our curricula respond to market needs and focus on “hands on” learning, which is in permanent contact with professionals from various institutions. As a result, U.Porto students have a high level of employment rate. Every year, major Portuguese companies contact the University looking for potential employees.

These results come from having a learning/teaching model based on multidisciplinary skills, autonomy, entrepreneurship and adjustment to the challenges of the job market. At U.Porto, you have the privilege to learn from a highly qualified and specialised teaching staff, have access to advanced laboratory equipment and technology, be able to study in modern libraries or enjoy one of the many opportunities for academic mobility. All of this is done in close connection with scientific research groups and regional and national industries and companies, as well as with the city’s two central hospitals.
